Recruiting via social media.

I don’t want to be rude here, but recruiting via social media sucks. It really sucks. It’s a truly horrendous way to find staff.

Let’s stop and think about the process. Employer A puts up a “Help Wanted” post on a page, forum, or group. The only people who see it, before the post disappears down the thread, are those browsing the same page at the very same time. The vast majority of people in the group or on the forum never see the “Help Wanted” post.

Let’s say Employee B actually sees the “Help Wanted” post and contacts the employer via DM or email. Employee B may only see a handful of job ads on that group, page, or forum and picks the best one for their needs. “Best” is a generous term here. “Least Worst” is more accurate.

Is anyone shocked when there’s mismatches and the employee is unreliable or unsuitable?

And then you have the reverse situation.

Job Hunter A puts up a post saying something like “Job wanted ASAP in the XYZ region. I’ve worked as a waiter in the past”. It’s lazy and desperate, and employers who respond are also lazy and desperate. Social media is the recruiting platform of choice for people who need work and staff NOW. It’s generally used by people who don’t plan well, and will take any job or any person.

Is anyone shocked when there’s mismatches and the employee is unreliable or unsuitable?

Yes finding staff these days is extremely hard but social media should be your “last port in a storm” option, not your preferred hiring platform.
