See You Next Season

Saving cash as a seasonal worker.

Let’s be honest here. Seasonal work is often low paid and you’re living in high priced towns. In many ski towns, average wages are about 60% of the living wage. Some crew are spending 50-60% of their pay packet on rent. That means you have to be very frugal with your pounds, dollars, yen, and Euros.
Here’s my top tips for saving cash as a seasonal worker.
1. Rent out that walk in robe, attic crawl space or broom cupboard to a small person. Oh and that car parking spot can be rented to a van lifer. Your rent is going to be you major expense so that’s an obvious first port-of-call to save some cash.

2. Buy second hand gear. Ski towns, beach resorts and backpacker areas have a constant stream of people coming and going. There’s surfboards, bikes, skis, wetsuits, and kayaks for sale cheap. Don’t be that chump who pays retail for sporting goods. If you are just learning to ski or surf, spend the money on good boots and wetsuits, not expensive boards and skis that won’t be suitable as you improve.

3. Learn how to maintain and repair your equipment. And then help your friends P-tex and wax their skis for a beer or two.

4. Get your party on at home and then head out, especially in Australia. Booze is seriously expensive in pubs down under. A bit of “pre-loading” can save you plenty of money. But don’t overdo it and get arrested or end up in hospital. That gets expensive quick.

5. Borrow, barter, and lend stuff.

6. Become a fitness junky or Trappist monk. Find a free hobby to keep you occupied in the down time.

7. Embrace your inner carbo loader. Food in ski towns and remote areas is expensive. Embrace the cheap stuff that has a long shelf life. I’m talking pasta, rice, and cereals. Tip: Add about 10 cents worth of Saffron to make boring white rice look really fancy.

8. Take your lunch to work and on the ski hill. Those take out lunches really add up.

9. Drink at the cheapest bar in town. You’ll save money and meet interesting people.

10. If you are in a ski town, Buy a pub jacket and duct-tape. That expensive black puffer jacket is going to get stolen or taken by mistake, but nobody is going to accidentally take this 80s outfit..

There you go, 10 tips to save you cash so you don’t need to sell a kidney or go dumpster diving to survive.

Good luck and have a great season.
