Telluride Resort in Colorado is your classic destination ski resort. It’s a six hour drive (longer in winter) from Salt Lake City, Denver and Albuquerque so it relies on fly-in skiers to fill beds. It’s rarely crowded, especially on the advance slopes closer to the old town.
Telluride also has legendary hike-to terrain in areas like the Palmyra Peak & Black Iron Bowl. The ten Gold Hill Chutes are sensational and a fine reward for skiers taking the 30 minute lung busting high altitude hike to the entry gates. Telluride also has one of the most user friendly beginner areas that is a hit with families (and instructors!).
Being a high altitude resort close to the Utah deserts, the snow quality is world class. The San Juan Mountains get hit by storms barrelling through Southern Colorado serious amounts of snow fall, and after a 2 foot dump, bluebird days quickly follow.

Telluride has two centres, the Old Town with it’s rich mining history and beautiful historic buildings, and the Mountain Village which is where most visitors stay in condos and hotels. The two centres are connected by a gondola which is more a transport lift than a lift to access terrain.
Telluride also has a great festival and summer scene making it very possible to stay and work all year round, and if you want a mountain bike break, Moab is less than three hours drive away.
Arches National Park, just near Moab, is also a must visit.

Big Billies Lodge is a 146 room on-mountain employee housing complex and if you can secure a place here, you’re set for the season. Big Billie’s is reserved by hiring managers, so securing the job first aids in the housing search.
There’s also down valley accommodation and regular buses on the SMART system.
Tips: Telluride should be on your radar if you’re into big mountain terrain and a true Colorado experience, but you definitely need your accommodation and work sorted very early. eg before September preferably July.
There’s also good money to be made in construction in summer and fall.
