There’s a lot of people taking gap years in ski resorts.
When I finished an accounting and finance degree, I’d been at school and university for 16 years. The last thing I wanted was to jump into a career with an intensive “professional year” to get fully qualified, so I took a gap year.
That stretched into 2 years, then 3. By that stage, it had become clear that being a suit was not for me. I’d taken more than a gap year.
Our guest on this podcast is Matt Bramall and we discuss his transition from gap year to veteran seasonaire, to full time resident of Revelstoke in British Columbia. Matt is a UK citizen and we discuss the long visa transition to permanent residency. We also look at why Revelstoke was the town that convinced Matt to put down a few roots.
We discuss how crew go from party animals in Season 1 to people who crave full time year round work and a place to call home. We even chat about the mighty Revelstoke Cricket Club and how team sport is a fantastic way to see the region and build connections in ski towns.
Ski towns often have rugby, netball, and cricket teams with local and international players. Seasons typically include games in a local league (travel to towns up to 3 hours away) and tournament play. This involves multiple teams travelling to a specific location over a weekend, with games on a Saturday followed by finals on the Sunday.
Elk Valley Rugby and Netball club, are looking for male and female players in Fernie. This is a well-connected club that can help with employment and potentially housing for players.

Revy is setting the standard when it comes to employee housing, With 600 new employee beds in the pipeline (at the resort 10km away from the town) Revelstoke is setting itself up as a premium resort with outstanding service.
One thing we forgot to mention in the podcast is young people travelling to the other side of the world and falling in love with a local. It’s a story as old as time, and when that happens, those gap year plans go out the window!!
