Five months ago we posted a blog entry titled “Australian Ski Resorts Need to Start Hiring Now“. We knew procrastinating and then using social media to attract staff was going to end very badly.
Very few employers saw the warning signs and the predictable mess has arrived.
This is a screenshot from an ad posted on a Backpacker Facebook group with 250,000 members. The recruiter requested people PM him if they were interested in the jobs. In 2 days the post has had 145 comments. Most of them are from people telling the recruiter, they have PMed him. The other comments are by a scammer trying to get people’s contact details for identity fraud. God knows how many PMs the recruiter has received, but 500+ is a reasonable estimate.
It’s also pretty obvious many of the people PM-ing the recruiter aren’t in Australia and have no chance of getting visas. The original ad had no information about the positions qualifying for a working holiday visa extension. The quality of applicants will be very low, and most people won’t get a response. No doubt, many of those who don’t get a response will now be contacting the hotel directly asking about their applications.
What a mess.
There’s a reason why posting recruiting ads social media is free. The costs to businesses come later.
