This photo of a $30 pizza in an Aussie ski town went viral the other day.

So many restaurants in Australian ski resorts are operating without chefs or operating without enough chefs.

During the autumn, Australian ski businesses were telling us they had received a record number of resumes. Employers falsely assumed there was high demand for ski jobs and their hiring was on track.

We recently conducted a poll on a popular ski job Facebook group about job hunting strategies. 35% of job hunters said they “send out their resumes as much as possible”. Another 30% indicated they would send out resumes 20-50 times in their job search.

In most countries, we actually believe there are less people willing and able to work in ski resorts.

For this Australian winter, we are also seeing huge numbers of employee no-shows. This is probably due to 1. young people accepting multiple job offers and then only showing up for one of them and 2. Young people financially unable to get to, or get housing in ski towns.

Employee “no shows” in Australian ski resorts are often due to poor snow conditions. This season we have good snow and we are now seeing “no shows” for jobs that include employee housing. This is a new development.

It is very clear that there are a huge number of junk resumes being sent to hiring managers.

These junk resumes are often hard to spot because AI generated resumes look like good candidates. A good looking resume also doesn’t tell the hiring manager how many other employers have received it.

In summary, hiring rates (when employees actually show up for work) per 100 resumes received is plummeting.

Many of the companies in the Australian ski industry that are now desperately searching for staff were: 1. extensively recruiting on social media in Autumn and 2. Making it very easy for candidates to send in their resumes.
